Welcome to Lexden Choral Society

Lexden Choral Society is an all-inclusive community choir based at St Leonard’s Church in Lexden, Colchester. Formed in 1992 by Sarah Blake, our ethos is to perform to the highest standard, but also to create a friendly atmosphere where there are no stars but everyone feels welcome and part of a thriving, enthusiastic ensemble. There are no auditions for new members and everyone’s contribution is equally prized. Sarah conducted the choir until 2014, when John Chillingworth became conductor.

We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm–9.30pm in the St Leonard’s Church Hall on Lexden Road (behind the church). New members are very welcome to join us!

The choir has grown steadily in size and reputation, and music-lovers eagerly look forward to our concerts. We sing a wide variety of music from the great choral classics to opera choruses, musicals, swing standards and pop arrangements. In 2019 this reputation resulted in an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall, New York.

Here’s a selection of audience feedback after our most recent concert in St Botolph’s for Remembrance 2025:

‘What an enjoyable evening we had at the Brahms Requiem concert! The choir was amazing and I hope that you will do many more concerts like this in the future.’

‘Huge congratulations and thanks for a very enjoyable concert this evening. The Brahms was beautiful – I loved the two pianists and timpani accompanying the choir. As always the band and choir provided a different feeling for the second half.’
